We departed by zodiac at 8 AM for our morning hike, scrambling over lava rocks to get on shore. Our hike was a two hour loop passing Sally Lightfoot crabs crawling on the rocks, snoozing sea lions, nesting blue-footed boobies & frigate birds, gulls and land iguanas resting in the shade of prickly-pear cacti.
The male frigate birds inflate a large red balloon-like sac on their throats to attract females, sometimes successfully, sometimes getting the cold-shoulder. All of the wildlife is completely oblivious to humans and the boobies will even construct their primitive nests made of rocks, twigs and guano in the middle of the path.
In my next post I will highlight the three types of boobies seen in the Galapagos.
