Snorkeling with the sea lions in Darwin Bay, Genovesa

After our return from our El Barranco hike we grabbed our snorkel gear and wet suits and had the option of going on a deep water snorkeling excursion or snorkeling off the beach at Darwin Bay. We chose the beach excursion for a chance to observe and snorkel with the sea lions.

I had read quite a bit about the seasons and the water temperature before we went. The dry season runs from late June through December. During this time the water temperature supposedly is cooler, the seas rougher and the the visibility in the water lower. But this is the breeding season for many birds, marine iguanas, sea lions and fur seals.

I was surprised by the water temperature and thought it was quite pleasant. Although we wore shorty wet suits I doubt we really needed them. One thing I would recommend bringing is a dive shirt to go between your bathing suit and wet suit.

We snorkeled for awhile and I spent some time on the beach taking photos of the sea lions and then it was all aboard by noon for lunch and a lecture before heading out again for afternoon excursions.
