Eyrarbaki |
We returned to the coastal road and traveled on to Eyrarbakki, a tiny fishing village. Back in the day Eyrarbakki was Iceland's main port and a bustling trading town where farmers from all over south Iceland came to barter for supplies at the general store. We visited one of Iceland's oldest houses, built by Danish traders in 1765.
We headed north to the Ring Road, stopped for lunch in Hella and then drove around some picturesque horse farms, continually stopping for one photo after the next. The map at left shows the location of some of the most important horse breeding farms in this area.
Next we followed an unsurfaced road winding through the lovely Rangarvellir valley to a medieval turf-roofed farm and 19th century church at Keldur. The settlement once belonged to a character in one of the Icelandic sagas.
