Seljalandsfoss |
We were getting pretty tired having been on the go since 6:30 AM and also a bit jet lagged, so even though there were more things to see and do we decided to head towards our hotel, stopping briefly for a photo stop at Seljalandsfoss, right off the ring road. The falls drop around 200' from the cliffs above. You can actually walk behind the waterfalls here.
A little ways down the road from there is Skogar, nestling under the Eyjafjallajokull ice cap, the location of our hotel for the night and, Skogarfoss, stunning falls that drop 200' over mossy cliffs that were once on the coastline. It was the start of a long holiday weekend and there were lots of families camping at the falls. You can climb a steep staircase alongside the falls and then hike onwards into the interior. Legend has it that an early settler hid a chest of gold behind the falls.

We, however, are not campers, so we checked into the Hotel Skogar, a small comfy hotel about a 5 minute walk from the falls, which also houses a gourmet restaurant. We settled in, showered and walked over to the falls and then had a yummy seafood dinner. This would be a good base for exploring some of the highlights of the area such as hikes to hikes to Thorsmörk and Landmannalaugar, super jeep or snowmobile excursions to the Myrdalsjökull glacier and daytrips to the Dyrholaey cliffs and black beaches of Vik.
