Iceland - more waterfalls and horses

The N1 - heading east

We made it back to the coast without incident, continuing westward towards the Skaftafell National Park. We were now crossing into Southeast Iceland and the stretch of the Ring Rd. from here to Hofn that Lonely Planet describes as "truly mind-blowing, transporting you across vast deltas of gray glacial sand, past lost-looking farms, around the toes of craggy mountains, and by glacier tongues and ice-filled lagoons." And no towns.

In our first stretch we saw more basalt columns, waterfalls, horses and turf covered ruined farm buildings.

 Kirkjugolf
We made a stop at Kirkjugolf; once mistaken for a worn down church floor, this is a natural phenomenon, an eroded slab of basalt columns.

We also stopped across from  Foss á Siðu,  located on private property, a waterfall that on especially windy days can appear as if it is going up, not falling over the cliffs. Opposite the falls is an outcropping of cliffs believed to be home to some of Iceland's "hidden people".
