The road to Pakgil

Pakgil - how's that for a dramatic campsite! photo from http://www.thakgil.is

We stopped to get gas in Vik and into the tourist office for some brochures and maps of south and southeast Iceland. We took their recommendation of taking a back road east of Vik up towards the Katla volcano and on the edge of the Myrdalsjokull glacier.

As we left the coast we traveled first through farmland and then into a rather otherworldly lava landscape complete with an abandoned farm's ruined, bleached wooden buildings, high on a ridge top. At the very end of the 14 km long rough scary road is the campsite of Pakgil; we turned around before we made it that far fearing for the condition of our car and tires, but I've included a couple of pix from the website.
