Vik, Dyrholaey, black sand beaches, cliffs and basalt columns.

We began the day by driving west a bit from Skogar and then down to the coast near Vik for a walk on a gorgeous black sand beach at Reynisfara, framed by dramatic cliffs of basalt columns reaching down to the beach. Off shore are picturesque sea stacks and the Dyrholaey sea arch to the west. Legend has it that the sea stacks, which dramatically rise from the sea like fingers, are actually trolls that got caught in the sun. The cliffs are full of caves formed by the basalt and a nesting area for puffins in the early summer.

We were lucky to have a blue sky day today - this area is just stunningly beautiful. Had we had more time we would have taken a hike along the top of the ridge following the coast.

Below are a lot of photos from our morning.
